My Lifelong Journey To Being A "Why Aren't You A Model Yet?" Level of Fitness/Hotness: Chapter 1- Being Semi-Fat and Doing Something About It Feels Better Than Just Being Semi-Fat

20/02/2016

Disclaimer: Because I haven't gotten into the habit of having blog-ready photos (I have this notion that all the real bloggers just take photos in landscape, ready to be edited on VSCO or Photoshop, or whatever secret editing app they use that make their photos look like screen grabs from a Wes Anderson film), all the photos in this entry will be portraits and pretty shitty quality like the one above. Here at Sabeezknees, we have to make do with what we have.

I was supposed to write this about a week ago but I never found the time (read: I chose to watch binge-watch Youtube videos instead) to gather my thoughts about the subject. But today at work (update: I'm currently interning in Singapore!) curiosity got the best of me when I found a scale under the bathroom sink countertop and I decided to see all the progress I had been preaching about to people as well as in this blog. When I saw the numbers on the scale staring back at me from in between my feet, I felt that there was no better time to write this than today, when I found out that I'm back at the weight I started with when I began my fitness journey.

Coincidentally enough, I found a photo of myself on the very day I wrote the letter!! This was taken in my first period Japanese class, a few hours before the letter existed.

My 5 Pet Peeves While Hanging Out

I'd like to think I've got a fairly high tolerance for people. It takes a lot for me to get mad at someone, and even when I do get mad I usually just don't talk to them until I cool off. It's mostly because I think that the situation doesn't call for anything so drastic, but honestly it's also partly because I'm non-confrontational by nature. Nevertheless, there are many things that still irk me enough to make me put it in a list and blog about it.

Friday Night Highlights

06/11/2015

I think it was around Spring 2014 I started feeling the pressure of the daunting transition from college to the real world. I realised that I had so much to do and so much to prove before I could even think about whether I wanted to wear the traditional cap and gown or a hakama (judging by past seniors' Facebook grad photos I could wear either one, but that's a dilemma for another day). I was so emotional from personal things that had just happened to me and also in a state of constant panic because for the first time in my life, my future was so uncertain. But one day, I had an epiphany: I can't do anything but learn from the past and need to stop being consumed with fear of the future. So instead of stressing myself out about things that have already happened and thinking too far ahead, I need to slow my roll and celebrate the good things that are happening or have happened recently-- you know, stop and smell the roses, etc etc. Which is what I'm doing today, and hopefully other Fridays to come; these are some highlights of my week!

#BBBS2K15: Blacows

14/10/2015

Ever since I got back from two whole months of eating whatever the hell I wanted in Manila, I've been trying (keyword: TRYING) to watch what I eat. I've been doing pretty well so far, but two weeks into my new (relatively) healthier life, I decided I needed a burger... badly. I had the self-control to wait 'till my planned cheat day to finally give in to my craving. Yay me!

Choosing what burger to eat was easy, I had heard good things about Blacows, and after reading a few blogposts about it, I decided to cash in my burger calories here. One over enthusiastic blog even crowned it "the best burger in the planet" so I entered with high standards. I obviously took that statement with a grain of salt, but it did make me think that it could be a promising contender or maybe even a victor over reigning champion, Kiriy's burger in Seijogakoenmae Station.

So the question remains... was Blacows's avo burger better than Kiriy's?

5 Things People Assume About Living In Tokyo And How They're Wrong

13/10/2015

I'm one of the very few in Manila that decided to go to Tokyo for university, so when I come home, people are always curious about what it's like living there. When it comes up, I find myself saying the same thing repeatedly that it's almost routine. They ask me how Tokyo is, I say "fine, ok," they ask if I live in a dorm, I say yes, do I cook at home or do I eat out more, etc etc, then when the question round's over, they say things like, "you must eat sushi all the time!" Don't get me wrong, I'm in no means annoyed by any of this, I like to hear what people think I do in Tokyo based on the photos I share and the stories I tell. And for the record, I actually try to stay away from sushi because they're deceptively light, but are heavy on the kcals (white rice!!).

I've had my fair share of these conversations in the past 3 years, so I've put together the top 5 most repeated assumptions about my life in Tokyo... that I can prove false with my own personal experiences.

Looking On The Bright Side: Turning Dread Into Excitement

20/09/2015

I'm quite guilty for being one of those people that get awfully jealous of what other people have and taking what I have for granted. It's a terrible habit of mine that I often find myself doing whenever I scroll through Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and even when I'm catching up with friends. Yes, I know, "don't compare your behind-the-scenes other's highlight reel" etc etc... I don't know about anyone else, but that's really much easier said than done. Right now, I'm still working towards a big goal/turning a new chapter, which involves a lot of work, uncertainty, and anticipation, so I often envy the people who seem like they're happy and carefree (which I know is most probably not the case).

Un Sabor De Chile En La Casa de Eduardo

07/08/2015

("A taste of Chile in Casa de Eduardo"... ya, I speak Spanish. HAHA no I don't)

Sebastian has been able to experience a good amount of Filipino culture and food in his couple visits in Manila, while I have never been and don't know so much about Chile. So when I found out that there was Casa de Eduardo, a Chilean restaurant in Tokyo (apparently the only one that exists!), I couldn't wait to try it.

My Date with Becky the She-devil: Renting A Dog @ Yoyogi Park

05/08/2015

If you know me you would know that I love dogs. Like watch-puppy-video-compilations-in-my-spare-time level of obsession love.
Last year, I made the trip all the way to Odaiba because I had heard that you could rent a dog there but much my disappointment, they told me stopped offering those services awhile back.
So this year, a friend told me you could rent a dog in Yoyogi Park... and I literally. couldn't. even. I grabbed my friend and hopped on the next train to Yoyogi park (not really) to go rent me some dogs!

Extra Avocado? Lettuce Eat! CRISP SALAD WORKS @ Azabujuban

I'm not much of a salad-as-a-meal type of gal. Salad as a side? Sure. But as the main show? Get out of my damn face.
Especially in Tokyo where their idea of a salad is shredded cabbage and some sort of dressing.
I went to this one restaurant that served shredded cabbage topped with ketchup and mayo. No joke. Here's the beaut in all its glory:

Best Burger Search Introduction: My First Burgers

Growing up, I never really liked burgers. Neither of my parents were very keen on them so I never really saw the appeal.
But then two years ago I had a couple burgers that changed my life and now, among many other foods (ie. ceviche), I am on the search for the burger that I can call the best I've ever had in my entire life!

Dada Dinners: Lunch in Maisen

24/05/2015

I've been pining over these CDG x Converse sneakers for an ill minute now so a few hours before my dad had to go to the airport, we headed to Omotesando to check out the Comme store to see if they had them. Turns out Japan doesn't sell the sneakers without polka dots which aren't really my thing, so my dad and I went to get some pasalubong for my mom and brothers then headed to lunch at Maisen.

Dada dinners: Kansai-style Sukiyaki

My dad visits Tokyo pretty regularly; supposedly for me but I have a hunch that he just uses me as an excuse to keep coming to the country that he fanboys over!!

I call his visits, "Dada visits" and they can be a great time; I get to sleep in a hotel bed and live closer to school for a couple days, sometimes he brings my brothers along so I get to spend time with them, I get to do some shopping, but most importantly, I get to eat at all the restaurants I couldn't otherwise afford on my college student budget! (and I get to order whatever I want).. Dada dinners.

I decided to split my post into two parts because I felt like it was too long!

After lunch I headed to Yoyogi park to meet up with my friends and their cute dogs, Kita the Shiba Inu, Ponyo the Toy Poodle, and Peanut the Teacup Yorkie.

Rockabilly dancers in the Yoyogi Park entrance. I did a quick Google search of them and found out they've been performing on the same spot every Sunday for 20 years now.

It was quite the eventful weekend and a great last couple days before I have to start studying for midterms! Not only did I find out that that my favourite and recently closed Vietnamese restaurant I had grieved over a few days ago has a sister restaurant not too far away from me, I got to pet some dogs at the dog park in Yoyogi!

Current Obsessions: The Awkward Season Between Spring and Summer Edition

16/05/2015

Spring sprung many weeks ago and all the cherry blossoms (that I finally got to see this year!!) are long gone. And just like the sakura, my interest for this blog withered away as I settled into this semester. However, unlike sakura, I'm back and I'm ready to try again! And what better way to say "HEy I'm back!" than an update on what my obsessive personality has dedicated its time to this time!!!
